In this punchy, romantic take on the wrestling world where only some of the physical contact takes place in the ring, sports journalist Karen Montgomery has been following for years the career of Brett Kerrigan, one of the smallest cruiserweight wrestlers in the business, and can recall in detail every bout he has ever fought, recognising his outstanding skills as a wrestler and his intuitive flair for entertaining the crowd. She has even written an award-winning article about him. Now she desperately wants to meet him. One night, after many failed attempts to reach him, she looks up to find him standing right there in front of her. They get talking and they immediately hit it off. However, as they become involved and grow ever-closer, Brett loses his contract and must strike out on his own. Will their relationship survive the pressures on both of them, their differences in ages, and the other women in Brett's life? Or will one of them decide they are not the ideal tag-team after all?

The Cruiserweight eBook L Anne Carrington

The subject matter (professional wresting) was unusual for a fiction work and for that reason was an enjoyable novelty. But I have three main criticisms. First, every character is just so lovable. You would think that would be a plus, but for me, good fiction has to have some kind of conflict. There was none here. Everybody was just so thoughtful, charming, funny and loyal. Nobody gets jealous, even when presented with situations that would make most people furious (like when your girlfriend finds out you hang with a female friend with benefits when you're on the road, which is all the time). Everybody got along so well. It's hard to believe that there are no jerks that you would run into on the professional wrestling circuit. Second, the plot is very thin and predictable. It's basically the story of two people who meet, fall in love and start a family. That's it. I kept thinking surely something would interfere with this idyllic path, but it never did. Finally, the ebook version was filled with typos and poorly formatted. There was no way to know that a new scene had started, as it all ran together. Many times I thought some words had been left out, as one sentence did not relate to the previous one, only to realize after reading a little more that the scene had shifted. Overall, it was a pleasant story and I did like it enough to finish it, but it was lacking any real substance.

The Cruiserweight eBook L Anne Carrington Reviews

This novel was an entirely new experience for me. Mixing romance and wrestling is definitely unique. I, however, know absolutely nothing about wrestling. I don't watch it, I don't know the terminology, and the only wrestlers I've known are has-beens.

With this in mind, I didn't know what to expect from The Cruiserweight. The book is a gentle read, the pace is sedate, which is a good thing because it gives you plenty of time to get into the world of wrestling. Basically the novel follows Karen, a journalist covering wrestling events, her meeting a wrestler 18 years her junior, and their subsequent romance.

I think a number of women will identify with this book. I'm built like Heather Locklear, which puts me into a minority group. And it's a default setting I have no control over. Most women however are not *as this book says* 'poles', but are instead rounder, curvier and decidedly voluptuously feminine. For them, the main character Karen will represent them, finally a main character who is an every-woman lady. It's heartwarming to read about a romance where the man isn't pining after a swimsuit model, but truly loves the curves on his lady.

When the content heats up, it heats up a lot. Carrington doesn't skimp on details (at all) - and at some points it definitely felt like a relationship built on sexual encounters. But then aren't they all? That's the glue that binds a couple together at the beginning, the whole attraction factor *thing*, so again I think Carrington kept it real. However much to my shock and horror, I realised I'm a prude. Reading this, there were some sexual shenanigans that made me uncomfortable to read, however I know enough people who do this sort of thing, and I've never given it much thought, until I had to read it in here. So be warned, this book is liberal.

The book has a nice happy ending, and overall is a sedate love story with a lot of wrestling thrown in as that is the central theme. It's not my usual cup of tea, it's the first time I've ever read anything like this, but it's a great beach read, just don't read it if you've just broken up with your boyfriend. But if you like wrestling, you will love this book.
Review created as part of the One Hundred Romances project.

L. Anne Carrington has created a book which doesn't fit well into standard categories. Part romance, part action, and a whole lot of wrestling, the story is told from the perspective of Brett Kerrigan, a rough-and-tumble cruiserweight wrestler whose main job, it seems, is to get beaten up by bigger stars. Brett catches the eye of Karen Montgomery, a sport reporter who sees something special in the tough guy. This is clearly a world Carrington knows well, and she brings in a wealth of details which will surely fascinate wrestling fans.

I'm not a wrestling fan, but I imagine that true fans would enjoy the gritty action. The problem I have with The Cruiserweight is not the wrestling, but the stilted treatment of the characters. We are repeatedly told that Brett is not like the other wrestlers, even in the midst of yet another sex scene with yet another willing and compliant woman. He cares, we are told, even as he succumbs to the oral expertise of yet another buxom and panting fan. There is nothing wrong with a good sex scene or two or three, but none of the sex scenes are particularly good. It felt at times as if Carrington was eager to keep the attention of her male readers with scenes that were overly explicit and far from romantic.

Once Brett and Karen are actually dating, the author settles down and lets them behave more naturally toward each other, so the books ends on a better note that it starts. The ending is satisfying, if not incredibly surprising. All in all, this is a book more suited to wrestling fans than romance fans.

This is a world where the wrestlers trash talk in and out of the ring, where groupie girls are waiting. Amid all of this is Brett and Karen, two people who seem to have a pretty good head on their shoulders despite the madness (compared to others). It reads like a fantasy at times - and by that I don't mean the Harry Potter variety.
