In Cuba - Awakening from the Past, photojournalist Michal McClure captures life in Fidel Castro's Cuba with his insightful documentary photographs and accompanying writings. To understand the Cuba of today McClure takes the reader back to the Soviet Union in 1963 when Castro undertook his 40-day "victory tour" at the invitation of the Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev. Castro was the Soviet's new revolutionary hero with his transformation of Cuba into a communist/socialist country. McClure was also in the Soviet Union (with his camera) in 1963 as a graduate Russian language student. In 2011, McClure went to Cuba as an independent photojournalist where he met and photographed a broad cross section of Cubans doctor, student, government official, farmer, small businessman, and shop clerk. He also interviewed a former Castro guerrilla, and the retired photographer for Che Guevara and Fidel Castro. He saw how the Cuban people lived under the communist/socialist system with its incredible economic and governmental restraints while maintaining their unique Cuban spirit. Equally important, he found an awakening of hope for a new and better tomorrow. As the U.S. and Cuba establish stronger ties and American tourism in Cuba increases, McClure writes about the major obstacles to be overcome for the Cubans to begin experiencing the benefits of capitalism and democracy. The book's photographs, in addition to McClure's, are from noted Magnum photographers Henri Cartier-Bresson, Burt Glinn, and Semyour Raskin, along with Perfecto Romero, Che Guevara's photographer during the Cuban revolution.

In recent years, dozens of books have been written about Castro's Cuba, primarily it's history, economic structure, and travel tips for visitors. This book is arguably the best summary for anyone who is simply curious about life in the small, neighboring country that was initially viewed as an example of the threatening spread of communism and later as an mysterious and impoverished nation that was out of touch with the modern world. Michal McClure relies primarily on his exquisite photographs and short captions to provide a clear snapshot of contemporary Cuban life. He was in Russia during Castro's 40-day visit in 1963 , and devotes the first half of the book to photos and brief but informative narratives that portray the Russian economy and way of life. Even though Russia was a world power back then and its citizens enjoyed benefits such as free education and health care, the readers of this book might wonder why Castro chose to model Cuba's economy after Russia's.Product details

Cuba Awakening from the Past Michal McClure 9780692459805 Books Reviews
I've traveled to Cuba in the past, for a couple of weeks. I moved around as much as I could to experience what this incredible island has to offer. This book takes me back to my trip, reminding me of the sights, smells, flavors and sounds I don't think I'll ever be able to find anywhere else. Thanks to the author for bringing this magical book to all who have never had a chance to experience Cuba.
As the US moves into a renewed relationship with Cuba, there is a lot to discover. and rediscover. Cuba Awakening from the Past provides a visual tour as you explore Cuba with Michal McClure. His strong but lovely portrayal of the island nation and its people brings their story alive through colorful images of what Cuba looks like today. It also includes an interesting history about past and present connections between Cuba and Russia. Excellent content, beautifully executed.
Amazing photos of everyday Havana and the Cuban way of life. Really fascinating dialog of the Cuban adoption of Communism in the 1960's.
Very well written and accessible history of the transformation of Cuba under Castro; complemented by vivid, moment-in-time photos. Leaves me very curious about what tomorrow holds for Cuba.
This is a great book illustrating the everyday life in Cuba. This book has beautiful images of Cuban society and is complemented by a fascinating historical element, which takes the reader through the Fidel Castro adoption of communism and partnership with the Soviet Union in the 1960’s. Sections in the book include Fidel Castro and the Soviet Union -1963, Cuba’s Transformation to a Communist / Socialist Society, The Cuban-Soviet Divorce, Cuba Today, and Waiting for Tomorrow. It has a great balance of scenes from Cuba- including people, places, and colors.
My husband grew up in Cuba where his Dad was a Methodist missionary, became a District Superintendent, and founded clinics and mission churches. He started building the big Methodist "cathedral" in Holguin before the Castro regime forced him to leave. So the book was of particular interest. We visited there a few years ago with a mission team, visited that big church, and saw photos of Dr. Evans. The fellow who was Bishop at that time made a trip to Cuba from his retirement in Florida to meet us there. What an interesting trip for me.
I purchased this book after visiting a gallery of Michal’s related work in Carmel, CA a few years ago. Seeing the photographs in the gallery and now owning them in a book is one thing. Getting a history lesson regarding the Castro-Soviet Union connection is something else. I am more than pleasantly surprised with this book as a whole.
This book appears to be result of a personal project of Michal’s (I’m only assuming) given his time in Russia as a student in the 60’s and then his visit to Cuba in 2011. The photographs and commentary tell the story that should be read and truly understood by all as the US and Cuba relations are enhanced. The photographs (of Michal’s and others) display such warm emotion and the realism of the Cuban people in their everyday lives. I found myself studying the images, not only the details of the main subjects but the surrounding environments.
Thank you for taking us along for your journey back through time and back again. I now feel the need to make my own personal plans to visit Cuba n the coming years. If you do not already engage in lectures regarding the history of Cuba, you should consider doing so. Well done, Michal McClure, well done.
