With the exception of Amanda Quick's books, I general don't care for stories that deal with the rules of the British aristocracy. I greatly enjoyed this story, as well as the earlier novels written, by Jayne Ann Krentz, under the pen name of Amanda Quick. There is always a sense of humor that permeates her characters, as well as a story that is filled with lots of twists and turns. Perhaps, most significant, to me, are the strong, intelligent women who are at least as solid and enterprising as their male companions.
This story did not disappoint in any regard. The heroine, Madeline Devridge, is rumored to have killed her husband. Instead of retreating from society and it's gossip, she sets out to hire a man who can help her find out who is threatening her. Her relationship with Artemis Hunt and her eccentric aunt Bernice are modern in their approach to life and each other. The mysterious Vanzagarian Society, which permeates the story, lends enough of a sense of the paranormal to the story to satisfy this lover of everything Jayne Ann Krentz writes.
Met all my expectations and allowed me to spend many enjoyable hours.

I'm not a fan of historicals; however, the title of Ms. Quick's latest release caught my eye several months ago so I ordered it. I am so glad I did. This is a delightful romp with wonderful characters and the sharp, witty dialogue that has been missing from her last couple of books.
Madeline Deveridge is known as the Wicked Widow. They say she killed her husband. The gentlemen of society have placed wagers for the man who can spend the night with her and live to tell about it. Madeline is being haunted by her late husband. She enlists the aid of Artemis Hunt to help her find him. Artemis, like her late husband, is involved in Vanza, a philosphy featured in past novels by Ms. Quick. Artemis doesn't know how Madeline has learned so many of his secrets, but he is determined to find out. Sparks fly between them and the story takes off.
This is one of the best books by Ms. Quick in a long time. If you love drama, great dialogue, the characters that capture your interest, you will want to read this book!

I usually like Krentz men more than I like her protagonist and this is no exception. The plot is fast paced, and the secondary characters are amusing.
As usual the thrills were great and the adventure was the edge of your seat kind. Now the romance is WOW.

I personally could not choose a rating less than 5 ! Quick writes with such confidence and knowledge of the period in every way including customs, language and romance! It is impossible to put this book aside until you are finished, leaving you wanting more. Anyone with an adventurous spirit and romantic notions will enjoy this book!
The Wicked Widow is one of my favorite Amanda Quick novels. Reading it in sequence as the third Vanza novel revealed nuances I missed the last time I read it.

If you like victim heroines, this may not be the book for you, but if you like intelligent heroines, do read this story. You will enjoy it.
