Michael’s life was forever changed by the brutal murder of his wife. As the reality of her death registers, Michael feels a strange force at work inside of him. Seeing nine ominous doors in his mind, six of them burst open, he hears unfamiliar words whispered. Repeating those words, Michael finds himself, unwittingly avenging his wife by incinerating the killer.
Little did Michael know that the opening of those doors would also be the opening to a new world for him, one of magic and legend. Michael must journey to this other world to help defend the magic that is his birthright.
The magi of Kantwell, along with the human and dwarven races, a handful of elven guard, and the elite Avari warriors, now stand against the combined might of the trolls, ogres, and weres, under the ruthless leadership of the powerful wizard Mortow and the magi who follow him.
Will Michael’s unique magic be enough to save Kantwell and keep the races from falling into slavery or will Mortow be able to manipulate him to assure victory over all of Thelona?

The Nine Keys of Magic (The Chronicles of the Myrkron Book 1) eBook Timothy Woods Reviews
Feist, Eddings, Macaffery, Gaiman, - A very small selection of my favourite authors from 30 years of reading and re-reading fantasy stories. That many books - a number in the thousands - makes me quite particular about which new authors I use my time on. The speed and low cost of e-book availability means a lot of very "ordinary" books are now ridiculously easy to obtain and by which to have one's reading time wasted.
I have 2 comments to make about this story.
Upon finishing it I immediately jumped on-line looking for a sequel.
I have never been inspired to write an e-book review before this story.
I have enjoyed reading this book, am reading the next book in this set now
I picked the book up because couldn't find anything else that appealed more. I started off reading it and was honestly expecting a futuristic sci-fi kind of experience and less an epic adventure. Wow, was i way off the mark. The book came out of nowhere and seemed meet every expectation i could have from a book.
The writing and embellishments within the book were excellent. character building and story arcs were impressive and i honestly found myself unable to put it down. I read it completely through in one sitting.
The only negative thing i have to say about it is i can't find a sequel and my attempts and contacting the author about one have returned nothing so far. I seriously hope this series continues as it mades its way into my top 3 of over 80 novels on my kindle and in my collection.
Thanks for a great story so far =)
I was looking for a new book to read and my father suggested this one. I always loved the type of stories he read when I was a child, so I decided to give it a try. I was not disappointed at all. I was immediately drawn into the book, and thought my 14 yr old son would also enjoy it. We are both very pleased with the story. Great read for adults and teens.
Quite possibly the best book in this genre that I have ever read! I can hardly wait to read the next one!
I would agree with JayC from 3/10/12 that the first 50 or so pages have a certain style (or maybe lack thereof?) that didn't exactly suck me in but was still a decent read. Honestly, I'd give the first 30% or so of the book a 3.5 star rating while the last 70% would get a 5 star rating. I wish I could give 4 1/2 stars, but I rounded off to a total four stars overall.
I can't really put my finger on it but the first part of the book, I was very aware that I was reading a book. It's not until you get to Thelona that things really take off and from there on out, this is an awesome read. I couldn't put it down!
The characters that I really liked were Michael, Micah, Dain, Bran and the scout (name escapes me at the moment, but his horse's name is Fire). The character of Merric needs some fleshing out-as the Headmaster he seemed to me to be a bit of a generic Wizard type with no distinctive ambitions, hopes, dreams, etc of his own. I felt he was a bit of a blank slate beyond some one-off lines about being a widower, etc.
My only real concern at this point is that Michael has now become a sort of Superman vs. puny mortals superpowered juggernaut. I don't know what kind of real challenge the villain (Mortow) really would be for Michael. He (Michael) was able to wear out Merric during the testing phase of his personal shield and Merric and Mortow are roughly equal in power. There have been hints that Michael's real challenge will be himself-will he fall to the Dark Side kind of thing.
Judging from how the author handled the ending though, I trust that the second book is going to answer these questions and more. Looking forward to it immensely.

The book took me completely by surprise, I have seen it a few times on while perusing the fantasy/magic section of kindle books but i just didn't "feel" the title. I decided to download a sample just to satisfy my curiosity, well all I can say to my self is "dude what took you so freaking long!!". The book flowed seamlessly from page to page, it was like pouring water from a jug into a cup. What's is so special about the book is that the author uses creatures and ideas found in many fantasy books and masterfully spins a story using those building blocks, to form this world that completely sucks you in. The levels of magic described by doors is novel and clearly gives the reader a way to gauge power and ability. The use of Latin and histories as well is very well thought out. Certain portions of the book evoked so strong emotions from me that I had to take a breather before continuing (Pride, Sadness, Anger, Glee, Excitement). I immediately liked Michael (Protagonist) and felt he would be a good person to have as a friend. I love the concept of the Avari as well, though Micah is still a bit of an enigma i would love to have resolved. The betrayal was expected from Mieka ever since Michael thought she had something weird about her and she thoroughly enjoyed using her beauty to mess with people. Actually I believe that she might be Megan's sister, and was a plant by Mortow to spy on Merric. All in all the story is simply beautifully crafted and I cant wait for the sequel to come out.
Rarely ever giving 5 stars to a book, and I read voluminous amounts of books of many kinds, I give a wholehearted 5 stars to this book. The characters are well crafted. The story line is involving, suspenseful, and engaging. For those who enjoy this genre, it's an excellent read.
