It is becoming more and more a matter of regret that a larger amount of systematic effort was not established in early years for the gathering and preservation of the folk-lore of the Hawaiians. The world is under lasting obligations to the late Judge Fornander, and to Dr. Rae before him, for their painstaking efforts to gather the history of this people and trace their origin and migrations; but Fornander’s work only has seen the light, Dr. Rae’s manuscript having been accidentally destroyed by fire.
The early attempts of Dibble and Pogue to gather history from Hawaiians themselves have preserved to native and foreign readers much that would probably otherwise have been lost. To the late Judge Andrews we are indebted for a very full grammar and dictionary of the language, as also for a valuable manuscript collection of meles and antiquarian literature that passed to the custody of the Board of Education.

This really fleshes out some of the myths conglomerated into the movie Moana. I must say, though, the first chapter is weird. As has been shown in other reviews here and elsewhere, the first chapter is the Hawaiian/Polynesian retelling of Old Testament fables through new places and names. It's quite the interesting anthropological study, as many myths were not put to paper until long after missionaries and white weirdos in general alread were in contact with the peoples for a long time. The book itself points this out; so stick it out to be rewarded. What follows are the old myths/legends told to Thrum and extirpated of most colonial influence. These are the stories of Maui and others. It does read rather dryly, often "telling instead of showing" as it were. But the information is there. They do read a lot like the Native American myths I perused as a child while adventuring through the desert southwest. All in all, if this is something that interests you, you will not be disappointed. (just take that first chapter with a grain of salt)Product details

Hawaiian Folk Tales Illustrated eBook Thomas G Thrum Reviews
GREAT!
I'm hapa, myself and have a library of all things Hawaiiana. This is a rich addition, and informs my knowledge and, more importantly, my imagination about a culture and history of my people.
A very good read. The font is very small.
Just as advertised.
Informative
I read this prior to going on a trip to Hawaii. It was just ok, and I had a hard time forcing myself to finish it.
Great Book!!
