Charles Townsend is a recently laid off journalist and his son Justin has dropped out of medical school to sort out issues in his life. Hoping to make up for lost time when Justin was younger, father and son decide to take a cruise from their native California to Mexico together. Aboard the ship they attend a lecture by Professor Geoffrey Bell who has some rather startling ideas about time travel. Bell is more than an authority on the subject; however, he actively recruits members of his audience to take the “journey of their lives” by walking through a portal the Professor has discovered into the distant past.

Although they are skeptical of Bell’s claims, Charles and his son accept his offer to transport them back to the year 1900 to further his research. The two recruits, although instructed by Professor Bell to travel by train to Chicago, disembark in Galveston, Texas instead in the waning months before a Category 4 hurricane nearly destroys the port city and claims over 6,000 lives.

What follows, in total disregard of the very cautious Professor’s instructions to the contrary, is that the Townsends get very involved in events of the past, trying to overturn the wrongful conviction and execution of a distant relative. Both father and son find romantic interests at the local library as well. The massive storm continues to bear down on the flimsy structures and unsuspecting citizens of Galveston and Charles and Justin discover just how little their knowledge of the impending tragedy is worth when faced with Mother Nature at her most awesome and terrible.

“September Sky” is author Heldt’s first book in his American Journey series. “Mercer Street” and “Indiana Belle” follow it. Heldt has five other time travel thrillers in his Northwest Passage series. I am quickly becoming addicted to John Heldt’s stories and hope he continues to entertain his readers with many more such tales in the years to come.

Justin and Chuck decide to take an opportunity of a lifetime to travel from 2016 to 1900. While skeptical, they hoped it would give them a chance to strengthen their estranged father/son relationship. The professor who enables them to walk down the magic tunnel gives them strict instructions of what they can and cannot do and wants them to go to Chicago. However, Chuck has other plans, to go to Galveston and right a wrong and hopefully save a life.

Neither men planned to meet and fall in love with a couple of librarians during their travels. Do they stay in 1900? Do they convince the women they love to go to 2016? Can they prevent a murder? Can they save lives and business before the great hurricane of 1900 hits?
I love time travel books and eagerly awaited reading this one. I love the many ways that authors play with this theme and September Sky was no exception. A great adventure going back in time to journal and experience the past but not impact it.... well you'll see how that pans out! A fascinating and well paced story, with lovable and despicable characters, just as we like them... the twists and turns kept the interest going, Knowing a hurricane is going to obliterate the place you are in with new friends and more, makes for difficult choice. Great storytelling. Thanks John A Heldt. Look forward to reading more of your writing. Enjoyed your writing style very much.
This is a fast paced story of daring and courage where a father and son team travel back to 1900 from 2016 when they happen to be at lose ends. Both men find romance and themselves. The most interesting aspects of the book are the insights that are gleaned about how people lived in 1900 and how it compares to 2016. There are a lot pluses when compared to the advances and technology that the 21st century has to offer. The author went to a lot of trouble to research the daily life of 1900 in the city where most of the action plays out.
The character development is well done and the author creates a lot of twists and turns that keep the reader hooked right up until the end.
If you like the concept of time travel and what it might feel like then this novel is just the ticket.
I am guilty of really liking Heldt's writing voice and reading too many of his novels in a row. Here's a problem though...he writes the same basic story over and over again, while changing some names, places, and settings.

The plot basically goes. Highly moral traveler(s) goes through a portal to the past. Meets gorgeous, highly moral person(s) of the opposite sex. Reveals the time travel connection to this person(s). Then, ultimately, they return to the time travelers day to live out their lives.

Thus follows the plot of September Sky as a man and his son go back to solve a mystery in Galveston, Tx, just before the hurricane of 1913 hits. There they find comely brides. There is a bit of intrigue that you dont find in all of his books as they work on solving the mystery. Like the other books this is a charming, gentle tale of highly moral people who carefully consider all the ethical ramifications of their decisions. You don't see this sort of philosophizing in books much these days, and it is initially quite refreshing. The problem is that after a few of his books it gets a little boring.

A comment on characterization. The characters walk off the page very easily- meaning you can identify with them when you were at that point in your life. The strength of this aspect of the book is that you continue to think about them after you've finished their story. Something that writers rarely accomplish.

I've used the word 'sweet' to describe this tale. Let me elaborate a bit so you won't run for the exit. This book approaches love from an idealistic vantage point, perhaps somewhat representing mid-twentieth century values, but in a way where people don't just jump into bed for physical fulfillment. That's what i mean. So there aren't any graphic sex scenes depicted. Relationships are explored and evaluated for long term potential before taking a carnal step. Sweet may not be the word, but it's what occurred to me.

So my recommendation is...read these a couple at a time.
